Why do we have irrational fears?
If you look through the phobias
list you might be wondering why anyone could possibly be afraid
of some of those things? Phobias are irrational, even the most
mundane object, situation or thought can develop into a phobia under the
right conditions.
There are many ways in which a phobia or fear can develop; it
could be learnt through observation; it could be the result of
a sudden traumatic event or an accumulated experience of severe
stress. Which ever way it is, the principle is the same. A biological
response like fear has been associated with an object or situation
as the result of a emotionally charged incident. This link remains even if
you are not aware or remember the original incident. But each time
you encounter the trigger, you will experience all the feelings as you did then.
This association between trigger and response has become part of your unconscious awareness,
so no matter how much you rationalise the fear, the result would be the same.
Just as there are many ways that phobias can develop, there are also many ways in
which it can be unlearned. Using a combination approach of cognitive behavioural therapy (cbt),
clinical hypnosis, eft and nlp techinques, phobias can beaten.
Fear is an important survival strategy, but when it impacts on our everyday lives, it's time to bring it back in check.
